Wimbledon: Krejcikova begins title defence, Sinner in action

Alexandre Muller gets the early hold. That’s about as comfortable a service game as he’s had so far in this match.

His confidence is clearly up after that tie-break victory.

What a performance from Yastremska, the performance of her life. She came out with so many weapons and so much power, she was able to contain it.

She served smart, big and threw in some off-paced serves as well. It was a very well planned match.

Gauff never really felt comfortable on the grass, she didn’t have a lot of lead-up matches coming into Wimbledon. She was so gracious at the handshake.

Seeds number two and three have gone out of the women’s singles today, meaning the bottom half of the draw is opened right up.

There are still some top players in there, though – Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina and defending champion Barbora Krejcikova among them.

Alexandre Muller gets us under way in the third set.

Can he keep up the momentum?

Coco Gauff is out!

Ukraine’s world number 42 Dayana Yastremska causes the shock of round one with a straight-set win over one of the favourites for the women’s title.

Gauff waves to the Court One crowd as she leaves the court – a tally of nine double faults proved costly, as did her six winners compared with 29 unforced errors.

Yastremska found control to go with her power at key moments and she’s all smiles as she speaks to Rishi Persad on court.

Coco Gauff starts her service game with a ninth double fault of the match.

At 30-30 she goes wide with a backhand.

Match point…

Novak Djokovic certainly made some strange choices in that tie-break.

He made three unforced errors off the sliced backhand and he serve-volleyed at 6-5.

Credit where credit is due, Alexandre Muller’s body language, attitude and fighting spirit was absolutely exemplary in that second set.

He saved all 11 break points and he was down 5-2 in the tie-break. How on earth has he won that set? Talk about winning the big points.

40-30 up, an ace from Dayana Yastremska puts her 5-1 up in the second set.

Last chance saloon for the number two seed and French Open champion Coco Gauff.

Well then, this just got very interesting!

The crowd rise to their feet as Alexandre Muller takes a captivating tie-break to level the match against seven-time champion Novak Djokovic.

The roof is now going to be closed, and both players head off court. We’ll be back up and running in around 10 minutes.

Sorry. Make that eight.

Double ouch.

Two points for a double break for Yastremska.

That’s seven double faults from Coco Gauff in a set and a bit of tennis.

Ouch.

Well, well, well!

That’s seriously impressive stuff from Alexandre Muller. He was fighting just to stay in that tie-break at times, and saved two set points.

But he turned the tables on Novak Djokovic, who seemed to lose his nerve on serve at precisely the wrong time.

Game on!

“Don’t worry Coco, don’t worry!” is the shout from one fan.

“You’ve got it Coco, you’ve got it,” they add for good measure.

Yastremska holds serve to lead 3-1 in the second set.

Coco Gauff has had so much success, she can problem-solve her way through a match and that was an example as she decided to go bigger on the serve than she was before.

That will fire her up, she will not go away. You just have to hang in there.

Novak Djokovic just can’t put this set to bed.

The Court One crowd are doing their best to get behind Coco Gauff – they cheer loudly as a big ace puts her 30-0 up in her service game.

The hold swiftly follows and the French Open champion is on the board in set two.

Novak Djokovic takes a 6-5 lead in the tie-break to give himself a fifth set point.

A roar of delight from Dayana Yastremska as she backs up the break.
