Measles is on the rise in the US. There were 285 cases of measles in the US across 33 states in 2024, the highest case count since 2019. The pattern looks to continue this year, with one outbreak this month in West Texas already tallying dozens of cases – all of them in people who weren’t vaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown.
The measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is 97% effective after the recommended two doses, but vaccine exemptions are increasing, raising the risk of further spread of this highly contagious virus.
