Trent Alexander-Arnold registered his first assist as a Real Madrid player as Xabi Alonso’s side beat Juventus to reach the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup.
Alexander-Arnold, making his fourth successive start at the tournament, endured a quiet first half at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami but delivered a delicious cross from which Gonzalo Garcia nodded Madrid ahead nine minutes into the second half.
Alonso once again deployed a 5-3-2 system against the record Serie A champions, but his side looked vulnerable defensively in the first half and were fortunate not to fall behind in the early stages.
Randal Kolo Muani spurned a golden opportunity to give Juventus the lead when he sent a looping effort over the crossbar after he was sent racing clear by Kenan Yildiz, who had a powerful long-range drive deflected wide moments later.
Madrid’s best chance of the first half fell to Jude Bellingham, who was denied from a tight angle by the impressive Michele di Gregorio, while Federico Valverde was also thwarted by a magnificent one-handed stop by the 27-year-old.
The Juventus goalkeeper did brilliantly to deny Bellingham and Dean Huijsen early in the second half, but Garcia’s thumping header was too powerful to keep out.
Alonso’s team will face the winners of the last-16 tie between Borussia Dortmund and Monterrey in the quarter-finals this weekend.

Very much deserving winners. It was the youngster Gonzalo Garcia that rose to the occasion with a wonderful header and then game management came in. They were worthy winners.

Gonzalo Garcia’s second-half header, converting a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold, is the difference as Real Madrid move into the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup.
It’s a deserved victory for Real and only a superb goalkeeping display from Michele di Gregorio kept Real to one.
It’s the winner of the final last-16 tie, between Borussia Dortmund and Monterrey of Mexico, next up for Xabi Alonso’s side.
Randal Kolo Muani runs at the Real defence and into a defender, Antonio Rudiger, and crumples to the floor. A very emphatic no penalty waved away by the referee.
Real Madrid defend in numbers and in solid fashion, with Juventus eventually running offside as time ticks on to leave the Italians closer to the exit door.
Real are five minutes away from the quarter-finals.
Dani Ceballos comes on for Federico Valverde, who started off as Real’s captain before he handed the armband over to Luka Modric.
Valverde has been superb, probably only behind Juventus goalkeeper Michele di Gregorio as the best player on the pitch.

They look fatigued Juventus but they need to find something. Yes it could end up 2-0 but this is the time to take all the chances.
Jude Bellingham slides in and is late, he catches Nico Gonzalez and gets shown a yellow card.
Jude Bellingham makes an important block and then creates another Real chance. Kylian Mbappe releases Vinicius Jr, whose shot is blocked off.
Real come again and Aurelien Tchouameni aims for the bottom corner, but once again Juve keeper Michele di Gregorio is equal to the task, down quickly and pushing the ball away. That’s another save to add to his impressive personal highlights reel.
Luka Modric slides a fine ball down the left channel, Vinicius Jr’s stepover is a thing of beauty and gets him away from his marker, but there’s no-one on the end of his pullback.

Arda Guler comes off for Luka Modric, who gets the Real Madrid captain’s armband off of Federico Valverde.
Just as in the first half, we have a cooling break after 30 minutes of the half.
Real legend Luka Modric, who is leaving the club in the summer, will be coming on when we get back under way.
Real Madrid are still creating chances as they look to kill off the tie. Arda Guler is the latest to have a go, watching a dropping ball closely before hitting a volley, with the ball travelling through a crowded penalty area and stopped by the legs of the diving Michele di Gregorio.
The Juve keeper is keeping his side in the competition, although they only have 16 minutes plus stoppage time to get an equalising goal and take us to extra time.

This is a big decision to bring Yildiz off. There will be a few question marks as to whether this is the right decision or not.
Juventus sub Nico Gonzalez has a shot, but it is not successful and that’s the signal for another change as striker Kenan Yildiz comes off for Teun Koopmeiners.
Kylian Mbappe almost makes an instant impact but can’t get a shot away. It drops for Federico Valverde and his strike is a decent one, but Michele di Gregorio’s positioning is spot on and he is able to gather a low catch.
A huge cheer as Kylian Mbappe gets ready to come on for Real Madrid.
It has been a miserable tournament so far for the France forward as he was hospitalised after suffering from gastroenteritis.
In Real’s fourth match of the competition, he finally gets some action in the Club World Cup, replacing goalscorer Gonzalo Garcia.
A decent player to bring on.

He’s at it again Valverde. This isn’t simple, this is real quality. An overhead kick would have been special, it just wasn’t meant to be.

What was the main talking point?
Madrid fans will hope Alexander-Arnold’s assist is the first of many.
The full-back set up 92 goals in 354 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions during his time at Anfield – more than any other Premier League defender in that time – and his first goal involvement for the Spanish giants was certainly one to remember.
His whipped delivery for Garcia’s winner was a peach, allowing the 21-year-old to use the power of the cross to direct a firm header beyond Di Gregorio for his third goal at the Club World Cup.
Along with Turkey international Arda Guler, Madrid-born striker Garcia is one of the shining lights in Alonso’s new-look side, who head to the quarter-finals with the wind in their sails after recording their third straight win under their new coach.
What information do we collect from this quiz?
Who stood out and who did not?
Garcia’s second-half goal was just reward for another mature performance by the youngster.
The frontman has scored or assisted in every game he has appeared in at the Club World Cup so far, drawing favourable comparisons with former Madrid and Spain international Raul Gonzalez.
Juventus keeper Di Gregorio also impressed, making several outstanding saves either side of half-time to keep Madrid at bay – although he was powerless to prevent Garcia’s header from flying into the roof of the net.
France international Kolo Muani will be bitterly disappointed not to have given Igor Tudor’s team an early lead in Miami. The former Frankfurt man perhaps had too much time to pick his spot after running on to Yildiz’s pass, scooping the ball over the onrushing Thibaut Courtois and on to the roof of the net.
The standout statistics
-
Di Gregorio made 10 saves in Miami on Sunday, lifting his overall tally at the Club World Cup to 27.
-
Madrid have now won 14 of their past 15 matches at the Club World Cup, drawing the other against Al-Hilal in their first game at this summer’s tournament.
-
The Spanish giants have now scored in their past 14 matches in all competitions.
What next for these teams?
Real Madrid face either Dortmund or Monterrey, who play each other in the final last-16 tie, at 21:00 BST on Saturday, 5 July.
Juventus will head to Germany for a training camp later this summer before kicking off their Serie A campaign on the weekend of Saturday, 23 August.
