South East Water solar farm under consideration
A proposal to build a solar farm which would help generate electricity for South East Water in Kent is under consideration.
Sevenoaks District Council is considering leasing a former landfill site in Sevenoaks after being approached by a solar farm company.
The proposed site, mainly made up of a former Kent County Council landfill facility off Otford Road, may also include some additional land if a lease can be agreed with a different landowner.
Electricity from the solar farm would power the water treatment works at Cramptons Road operated by South East Water, alongside generating the council an income for 32 years.
Because of its previous use, the land is not suitable for housing and most agricultural activities.
Councillor Kevin Maskell, cabinet member for finance and investments, said it was a “positive proposal”.
He said: “New uses for the site are limited, making it ideal for a solar farm.
“The solar farm could generate clean, green electricity for years to come for the water company and the council, helping to meet our climate change objectives.”
Matthew Hersey, South East Water’s carbon strategy and economic manager, added: “This very promising project is one of a number we’re looking at across our supply area.”
The proposal, which will be considered by separate council committees on Tuesday and 15 July, will require planning permission.
