Chip crisis ends 90 years of leadership

Toyota in the US last year as the brand that sold the most vehicles, for the first time since 1931 General Motors has dethroned from the leadership. It’s because Toyota is handling the supply chain suffering and chip crisis better than GM.

GM announced that it sold 2.2 million vehicles in 2021. This means a 12.9 percent decrease compared to last year. Toyota, on the other hand, increased its sales by 10.4% in 2021 compared to the previous year, increasing it to 2.3 million.

“We passed General Motors,” Jack Hollis, Toyota North America Automotive Vice President, told reporters about their leadership. However, this is not our aim, we do not see this as a sustainable situation.

Since 1931, GM has continued to be the brand that sells the most vehicles in the United States. Shares of the company hit a 52-week high yesterday at $65.98 per share, after the chip crisis announced that it would ease.

GM North America Leader Stevie Carlisle stated that they aim to increase sales and said, “We plan to turn the economic strength in our favor in 2022 and increase our sales and market share with the reduction of the chip crisis.”
