France takes over the EU presidency

France took over the presidency of the European Union (EU) for 6 months as of January 1st.

Increasing the EU’s autonomy is one of France’s priorities for the next 6 months.

The French government, while conveying its priorities under the presidency of the period, states that they will work to make Europe “truly sovereign”. True sovereignty is defined as the ability to “exist” in the world to defend the EU’s interests and costs.

President of France, Emmanuel Macron, while describing his country’s priorities in December, used the phrase “To summarize the presidency of France in one sentence, our aim is to move from a cooperating Europe to a Europe that is completely sovereign in the world and is free in its decisions and fortunes.”

France also argues that it should be able to control the ends of Europe and that the Schengen area should be reorganized. For this, it is aimed to establish an “urgent border reinforcement mechanism” that will be activated in crisis situations.

Election will be held under the presidency of the transfer

While France is holding the EU term presidency, it will go to the elections at the same time. The first type of French presidential election will be held on April 10, and the second type will be held on April 24.

In France, the administration is expected to focus on the elections from March to the end of April and be busy with its own internal agendas for at least 2 months.

EU-Africa Hill will also be held in Brussels on 17-18 February during the French presidency. While evaluating this issue, Macron stated that he would involve Europe in the effort against terrorism in Africa and stated that he would support scientific, cultural and academic migration in the middle of Europe and Africa.

Under the French term presidency, it is aimed to create new job opportunities and to give importance to dealing with unemployment. In this context, a summit meeting is planned to be held in Paris on 10-11 March with the aim of making “Europe’s continent of innovation, production and job creation”.

After France, which took over the period presidency from Slovenia, the EU transfer leader will be Czechia as of July 1, 2022.
