Robotic therapy pets donated to dementia patients
Robotic fluffy animals will soon be bringing comfort to dementia patients in Lincolnshire.
The sensory aids, called Precious Petzzz, have been donated to hospital wards across the county in the hope cuddles with the toy cats and dogs will soothe patients.
They are described as lifelike companions – all simulating breathing and making animal noises.
The dementia pets will be available in Lincoln, Grantham and Pilgrim hospitals soon and patients will be able to keep them after their stay.
All of the robotic animals, funded by United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity (ULHC), come with beds and in a variety of designs, including spaniels and border collies.
Ben Petts, charity manager at ULHC, said: “When we heard about the project and the difference it will make, we didn’t hesitate to get on board and fund 146 dementia pets.”
Craig Ferris, group director of safeguarding and patient experience, added: “Spending time in hospital is unsettling for anyone, but particularly for our patients living with dementia.
“Sometimes having something familiar or a friendly distraction can bring great comfort.”
